Introduction to Outdoor Adventures
My love of bicycling and paddling a canoe has taken me across New York State, into Canada and across the pond to Ireland. Over the years, I have had many good times either alone or with friends, biking out in the hills of Mendon south of town, or along the Erie Canal Path, paddling near and far, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, day hiking, backpacking...just getting outside makes me feel good inside.
I love to ride my bike from my home into downtown Rochester early on a Sunday morning. You wouldn’t want to do that any other day of the week! The city looks different on a Sunday morning! It is asleep. From downtown, I turn east and ride out Monroe Avenue, past the quaint little shops you can find only on Monroe Avenue. Sometimes I will ride out East Avenue with its old stately mansions and large churches with their grand architecture. George Eastman, the man who founded the Eastman Kodak Company, built his mansion on East Avenue. I imagine what life must have been like in Rochester back in George Eastman’s day.
I have climbed 17 of the Adirondack High Peaks. I am not a peak bagger, preferring only to climb those peaks with a spectacular view at the top. And there are other peaks in the Adirondacks aside from the 46 High Peaks which offer breathtaking views...Noonmark and Mt. Jo are two.
On canoe camping trips, there is nothing finer than sitting around a campfire with friends waiting anxiously for a camp dutch oven meal to bake. Or paddling to a remote area of a lake and seeing a loon up close, or a Merganzer with her chicks huddled around her.
Life can be stressful. Getting away from the crowds and enjoying the great outdoors is my way of unwinding and maintaining my focus.
